International grain trader and agribusiness food company, Bunge, has set ten goals to help meet its environmental sustainability goals commitment.
Using 2016 as its base year, the company’s ten-year plan aims address impacts in the areas of energy use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water use and waste. In its report, Bunge North America Citizenship: Feed the World Sustainability the company states it will reduce water use per metric ton of production by 25 percent in areas of high water stress.
The company is also seeking to reduce total waste generation by 20 percent and GHG emissions and energy consumption by 10 percent each (per metric ton of production). These goals are elements of Bunge’s Environmental Management System, which also includes a corporate environmental sustainability policy, governance structure, and facility audits and monitoring systems.
The report points out that all the company’s facilities are making efforts to reduce their environmental footprint with “meaningful reductions through both continuous improvements in efficiency and capital expenditures”.
The reports states the rationale behind the move is that the company “plays a key role in making the global food supply chain more sustainable and transparent”. Bunge had carried out a “materiality assessment” in 2016 to identify the key issues most relevant to its stakeholders. The results of that study are reflected in this first North American citizenship report.
