He aliʻi ka ʻāina; he kauwā ke kanaka – “The land is chief, and man is its servant.” This traditional Hawaiian proverb reflects the core values of Parker Ranch – the belief that we are responsible for taking care of the land that sustains and nourishes us.
Established in 1847, Parker Ranch manages approximately 135,000 acres of land (54,600 hectares) on the North end of Hawaii Island, commonly known as the Big Island.
It describes itself as one of the largest and oldest cattle ranches in the United States, but that’s not its only claim to fame. This year, it also received a National Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Award, which recognizes outstanding beef and dairy producers, marketers and educators who demonstrate excellence in animal care and handling principles.
The official awards announcement highlights Parker Ranch’s dedication to raising animals in a way that respects natural resources while prioritizing cattle health, beef quality and food safety.
For many years, the ranch has focused on improving stewardship of its forest lands through various initiatives and partnerships. It is also actively engaged in renewable energy projects that will benefit both the ranch and Hawaii Island.
Animal care is a top priority. The ranch’s pasture-based operations create a natural, stress-free environment, ensuring the cattle’s well-being and resulting in a consistently high-quality product that Parker Ranch can be proud of.
About the BQA Awards
The BQA awards are funded by the Beef Checkoff Program, with additional financial support from Cargill Meat Solutions, and managed by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. The winners are selected by a committee of BQA-certified representatives from universities, state beef councils, sponsors and affiliated groups.
