The Irish food board, Bord Bia, has published its 2016 national sustainability program report. It is the only sustainability program in the world which operates on a national scale, uniting government, the private sector and food producers.
Under the program, called Origin Green, Bord Bia aims to have every farm, food and drink manufacturing business through Ireland set and achieve measurable sustainability targets, reduce environmental impact and serve local communities more effectively.
Independently verified at every stage, Origin Green enables Ireland’s farmers and food producers to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets, reduce environmental impact and serve local communities more effectively.
This latest report highlights the sustainability commitments of Ireland’s food and drink industry. Since the inception of Origin Green in 2012, over 137,000 carbon assessments have been completed on Irish beef and dairy farms. These audits have provided some 24.7 million pieces of information on the performance of Irish farms with regard to sustainable practices.
During 2016, 220 of Origin Green verified members, representing 90% of total exports, committed to more than 1,600 sustainability targets, a 100% increase on 2015 figures.
