“Great Food Transformation” Needed to Feed the World

Sustainable and efficient use of land and water through the application of technology can increase crop yields without the need to expand agricultural land, says a new report for the Agriculture Committee of the European Parliament.

It highlights the main future challenges of European agricultural systems, and outlines possible scenarios and pathways that could help define agricultural policy priorities at a European level.

Key report findings include that a 50 percent increase in food production will be needed by 2050 to feed a predicted additional 2.3 billion people. People will also need to change their dietary habits and undergo a “great food transformation” process in order to produce the amount of food required.
