SUMMARY: The role of enhanced rock weathering in capturing and storing carbon dioxide, including in dry climates
DESCRIPTION: A new study from the University of California, Davis and Cornell University shows that adding crushed volcanic rock to cropland can play a vital role in removing carbon from the atmosphere – even in arid climates. Previous research has shown that the process known as enhanced rock weathering has the potential to retain billions of tons of CO2 in the soil each year across global croplands. However, this is the first time its effectiveness has been demonstrated in moisture-limited conditions, using California as a test case.
