The Council for Agriculture Science and Technology (CAST) has released its latest paper looking at the role of agricultural science and technology in climate mitigation and adaptation – key aims of the Climate 21 Project introduced by the Biden Administration.

Topics covered include nutrient and pest management, animal systems, agricultural technologies, the food supply chain, and carbon markets.

Dr. David Baltensperger, Texas A&M, and chair of the commentary, states that agriculture is central to climate mitigation and adaptation. It can provide 10 – 20% of the additional sequestration and emissions reductions needed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The U.S. food supply chain has been actively partnering with farmers and ranchers to reduce the environmental impact of farming over the past 15 years, he says.

Dr. Juan Tricarico, Dairy Management Inc. and an author of the commentary believes that innovation in economic and social fields is critical to creating favorable environments to incentivize the adoption of new mitigation practices and technology by farmers and ranchers.
